Gluten-Free Apple Crumble

If you’re looking for a cozy, crowd-pleasing dessert that’s simple, naturally sweetened, and full of winter warmth - this Gluten-Free Apple Crumble is it. Think spiced apples under a golden, buttery oat topping… but without refined flour or sugar.

It’s easy enough for a weeknight and festive enough for a holiday table. Serve it warm with coconut cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the apple filling:

  • 4-5 medium apples, peeled and sliced thin

  • 1 ½ TBS arrowroot powder

  • 2-3 TBS coconut sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)

For the crumble topping:

  • 1 cup gluten-free rolled oats

  • ¼ cup coconut sugar

  • ¼ cup grass-fed butter, room temperature (or sub coconut oil for dairy-free)

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • Pinch of sea salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. In a mixing bowl, toss sliced apples with arrowroot, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until coated.

  3. Spread apple mixture evenly in a buttered 8x8-inch baking dish.

  4. In a separate bowl, mix oats, coconut sugar, room temperature butter, cinnamon, and salt until crumbly.

  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.

  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown.

  7. Let cool slightly before serving.

Tips & Swaps

  • Best apples to use: Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Granny Smith for a balance of sweetness and tartness.

  • No arrowroot? Swap with tapioca starch to thicken the filling.

  • Make it nutty: Add 2 TBS chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for extra crunch.

Why It Works for Winter

  • Apples are in peak season: Crisp, local apples are widely available and budget-friendly this time of year.

  • Warm, spiced aroma: Cinnamon and baked apples fill your kitchen with cozy vibes.

  • Hearty and feel-good: Comforting enough for dessert, clean enough for breakfast leftovers.
